Onye Aghala...
The Igbo saying onye aghala nwanne ya means: “Nobody should abandon their brother or sibling.”
This is where our brand name comes from. On its own, the word Aghala means “don’t abandon.” We chose this name for both inspiration and encouragement. Aghala is a reminder not to abandon family, and not to abandon culture either.
This brand comes from the desire to showcase Igbo identity through everyday apparel that is meaningful and comfortable.
Our “Obi Nwanne” drop features four siblings with their arms around each other, a nod to the fact that this brand was co-founded by siblings, with a logo designed by one of them. The words obi nwanne speak to the Igbo philosophy of communal living, compassion, and looking after one another - values that have been passed down among Ndi Igbo for generations.
Driven by our love of culture, language, and community, we hope that Aghala brings people together and sparks conversations about the richness of the Igbo language and proverbs - especially when someone sees your t-shirt or hoodie and asks: “What’s that?”
